Hypothesis
Social PsychBehavior in prison-like settings is driven primarily by situational roles, not personal disposition.
Method
Social Psych- n = 24 male undergrads, randomly assigned guard/prisoner
- Mock prison, planned 14 days; ended day 6
Key findings
Social Psych- Guards: Authoritarian and abusive behavior emerged
- Prisoners: Distress, depression, learned helplessness
Ethical issues
Social Psych- No fully informed consent or clear right to withdraw
- Psychological harm; researcher also acted as superintendent
- Replication failures and later critiques
